Diego Narvaez

Oil on canvas on wood

2020 Juror’s Choice Award (Juror – Rick Leong)

SKU: A653 Categories: , Tags: , ,

A young cedar rises from a nurse log on a sidewalk in Mexico City. The wall acts as a grid; the composition is almost abstract. Mystery arises in the contrast between the geometrical city and the intricate tree.

Artist Biography

Diego Narvaez was born and raised in Mexico City. His artistic practice centers on painting and drawing. Narvaez works from plain air experiences to create natural and urban landscapes. Through his art, he reflects on how we construct reality through sight and how the environment influences our perception. Like a Flaneur, Diego likes getting lost in non-places in the city. It is here where he realized that memory and oblivion are central in the construction of reality. The city is for Diego an extense lab where to reflect on Landscape. He is also passionate about painting natural environments. This has led him to participate in artistic residencies in Antarctica and Iceland. These valuable polar experiences molded Diego´s creative process and the way he understands landscape. Narvaez has presented solo exhibitions in important venues in Mexico, such as Anahuacalli-Diego Rivera and the Cultural Centre of Contemporary Mexico. Collectively, he has participated in exhibitions in USA, Argentina, Canada and Mexico. He obtained the first prize in Mexico’s Landscape Painting Biennial Luis Nishizawa in 2017. He is now steadily building his art career in BC. Last year, Diego obtained an Award of Excellence from the SFAS for his painting “Victoria”.
